I was born in Norwich, England a city in the south east known for its Norman Cathredral, having a pub for every day of the year and a church for every week.
After high school I signed up for the local art school where I took an art foundation course. There I would spend hours in the dark room perfecting my black and white printing.
I went on to Oxford Brookes University and graduated with a BA Hons in Fine Art. Living in Oxford I experimented for three years mostly with painting and photography.
London was my next stop where I sang in a band and photo assisted for a living. I landed my first commercial photo shoot taking pictures of electrical goods for Dixons a high street store which incidentally opened in 1937 as a photo studio.
Next I scored a camera trainee position on Ridley Scott's film Gladiator which was filming in the woods outside London. This gave me a taste for movie making so after that I headed to California and shot a bunch of student films.
I have been here ever since and made my first portrait portfolio shooting the people around Venice beach where I would sell my paintings on the weekend. I worked at a pro photo lab in Santa Monica were I ended up meeting other photographs and assistants. This led to working for Herb Ritts on the Vanilla Sky movie poster shoot with Tom Cruise.
I continue to grow my craft shooting portraits for publications like the Sunday Times Magazine and Guardian Weekend. The supplements give me freedom to explore my photography practice and experiment with lighting and composition.
I mix my time shooting commercial assignments with ad agencies and magazines with making personal series.
Filmmaking has always been a big part of my life (my father made documentaries). Last year I completed my first feature documentary called Skin Movers about the hidden world of Taxidermy filmed in a small town in Colorado.
In 2013 and 2015 my portrait work was exhibited In the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize at National Portrait Gallery in London.
In 2015 I married Brazilian ballerina Carla Korbes and on December 22nd 2015 we had a son named Rafael August partly named after August Sander one of the great portrait photographers of the twentieth century.
Some random things I like to do in my spare time
Go out to Joshua Tree desert where I have a 10 acre slice of the American West with two homesteader cabins on the land and a 1966 Holiday Rambler trailer there which you can rent on Air BnB.
Ride my 1976 BMW R75/6 motorbike.
